The first ten digits of a 52-digit number
Published on Monday, July 25, 2011Euler problem 13 asks you to find a way to store and manipulate an arbitrary number far beyond the storage capacity of the average language's standard integer data types. The problem asks you to add a hundred 50-digit numbers and find the first ten digits of the 52-digit sum. The tricky part is that, aside from BigInteger (which is not yet part of C#), there is no way to store a number that large in a value variable: unsigned 64-bit integers max out at 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 (20 digits), and 128-bit decimals can only hold 28-29 significant digits. My strategy was to store each digit as a member of an integer array and to find the answer to the Euler problem by printing out the first members of the array.
